Fire & Fall Prevention (For Older Adults)

 

If you're age 65 and older or under 65 with a disability, the Grayslake Fire Protection District would like to invite you to be a participant in our Fire & Fall Program. This program is free and will help identify hazards in your home. Our team members will focus on fire safety and fall prevention making sure your home is a safe and happy environment for years to come.Who is the program for?

  • Adults age 65 and older or under 65 with disabilities

  • Participants MUST live within the Grayslake Fire Protection District

How does the program work?

  • Interested individuals call to schedule an appointment for the FREE home safety visit.

  • A minimum of two (2) members of the community coalition will conduct the home visit.

  • Home safety visits will incorporate safety inspections, safety education, and installation.

  • Follow-up phone calls may be made to see if there are any questions or problems.

Program Highlights:

  • Provide FREE safety brochures on Fire & Fall Hazards

  • Provide Resources for additional help (Public Health, Dept of Aging, etc.) if needed

Program is carried out by a Community Coalition consisting of:

  • Grayslake Fire Department

  • Grayslake Police Department

  • Lake Forest Hospital

  • Village of Grayslake Senior Center

  • Volunteers from established Community Service Organizations. ◦ All volunteers have passed an extensive background check.◦ All volunteers will show official photo identification:

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

  • Have smoke alarms installed inside and outside ALL sleeping areas on every level of your home.

  • Test your smoke alarms once a month by pushing the test button.

  • Make sure everyone in your home can hear your smoke alarm.

  • Change smoke alarm batteries twice a year.

  • Replace smoke alarms every ten (10) years.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors also Save Lives

  • Install a carbon monoxide detector near the sleeping area of your home. This will alert you to the presence of any deadly carbon monoxide gas.
